Every Bed is a Custom Bed

Each and every bed Shane creates is custom-made to order. However, there are limitations to what can be modified.

Take, for example, our 1830 Cannonball Bed. It is a traditional low post bed modeled after an actual cannonball bed from the 1830s. The head posts on this bed are 46 inches tall and the foot posts are 36 inches.

To modify the height of this bedpost, we can lengthen the long rectangular section above the 7″ tulip “foot.” This can only be done before the bedpost is turned.

Normally, Shane places the side rails so they sit about 9 inches from the floor to the bottom of the rail. This can be raised to no higher than 10 inches without modifying the post.

Shane has engineered his beds to last for generations. The side rails are 7 inches high and 1.5 inches thick making them extremely sturdy.

Some modifications that Shane has made to 1830 Cannonball Beds include:

  • Lowering the placement of the headboard so the client can enjoy the view out her window
  • Raising the height of the head posts and headboard
  • Adjusting the position of the bed slats or platform insert to obtain the client’s desired mattress height
  • Creating a custom finish to coordinate with the clients antique furniture
